Jakarta Sinks by 2050

Due to poor drainage infrastructure, Jakarta is prone to flood in the rainy season. Meanwhile, surface water in Jakarta is highly polluted and contaminated. Water pipelines do not cover all areas of the city. This combination causesa massive use of underground water leading to land subsidence, which reach an average of 10-15 cm/year or more, especially in North Jakarta. This is much faster than the average level of increasing sea level. Considering the above situation which is coupled with climate change, Jakarta has been placed as one of the most vulnerable coastal cities in the world with the issue that approximately 95% of North Jakarta will be submerged by sea water by 2050.
